However, if your symptoms last over three weeks, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30521292\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">considered chronic laryngitis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Laryngitis Symptoms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to a weakened voice, common laryngitis symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/redriverent.com\/throat\/hoarseness\/\">Hoarseness<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Total loss of voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sore throat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain when talking or swallowing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry cough<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>What Causes Laryngitis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Various illnesses and other factors can cause laryngitis. The most common causes of acute laryngitis include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Viral infections like the cold or flu<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vocal strain caused by yelling or overusing your voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bacterial or fungal infections (less common)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If, instead, you have chronic laryngitis, it may be caused by one of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acid reflux (GERD)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exposure to certain chemicals or allergens that cause irritation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chronic sinusitis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regularly overusing your voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive alcohol use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>Could it Be Another Illness?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Other conditions can cause laryngitis, some of which can be serious medical issues. It\u2019s important to visit a medical provider if you\u2019ve had symptoms for over a few days that don\u2019t seem to be improving. Other potential causes include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Benign vocal lesions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vocal cord paralysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Laryngeal cancer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At your ENT visit, they will likely ask about your symptoms, listen to your voice and examine your vocal cords. Depending on your symptoms, additional testing may be required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Laryngitis Treatment Options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, acute laryngitis will resolve on its own after a few days of giving your voice a rest. You can use cough drops or a humidifier to help with discomfort.
